Pledging to continue his record of responsive, responsible and effective representation, Roberts District Supervisor John McGlennon today formally announced that he will seek re-election to the James City County Board of Supervisors in this November’s election. “With our new county administrator on board and the Comprehensive Plan update coming, James City County faces opportunities and challenges, and I am excited about the prospect of continuing to contribute to our community.”
McGlennon cited his efforts to support high quality services, from schools and libraries to parks and recreation, public safety and social services, to his work to protect the quality of life and fiscal responsibility of the county as “a record of achievement and accountability.”
“We can be proud of the fact that James City County has earned Triple-A bond ratings from all three major rating agencies. This is fiscal responsibility and earns taxpayers a lower interest rate when the county borrows for schools and other public facilities,” McGlennon said. “James City County has stepped up to fill the need for additional school funding as the state has lagged in its support,” he noted.
McGlennon has been recognized as a leader of local government through his chairing of the Coalition of High Growth Communities, an organization of cities and counties advocating for more authority to address the impact of growth. Two governors have appointed him to serve on their transition teams focusing on local government.
A champion of county leadership on environmental issues and land preservation, he has led the way in protecting Mainland Farm and other vital properties from development. He is leading the way in protecting our water supply from contamination by motor fuels and other contaminants. McGlennon has pushed the county to advance energy efficiency and a reduced dependence on fossil fuels.
Careful scrutiny of new development proposals is essential to keep the “small town feel” that makes James City County special. McGlennon sets high standards for new development, and does not support new growth for growth’s sake, but insists that it meet a need in the community.
A forceful advocate for our public safety officers, McGlennon is proud of our police, fire and emergency responders, and has supported programs to retain our first responders. He credits a commitment to close community-police relations for a high level of public confidence.
“James City County has an outstanding professional staff across the board, and as a result we enjoy a safe, beautiful community with great amenities,” he said. “It is critical that we continue to support these dedicated county employees, from first responders to groundskeepers, from mechanics and technicians to administrators and customer service representatives.
“I am glad to be contributing to a Board of Supervisors working well to tackle county issues, and believe I have more to offer,” he said. McGlennon is the Democratic nominee for the Roberts District in the November 5 election.
McGlennon earned his BA at Fordham University and his MA and PhD at The Johns Hopkins University. He is Professor of Government at the College of William & Mary with a specialization in state and local government. He is married to Terry U. McGlennon, who is an educator in the Newport News Public Schools. They have two sons, Andrew and Colin, both graduates of WJCC Schools.
