Two Providence Classical School Rhetoric students earned the highest awards in the National Junior American Citizens Art and Creative Expression Contest, sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) organization. The 2017-18 theme was: “100th Anniversary of World War I – Service on the Homefront.”
Representatives of the local DAR chapter, Mary Sue Dougherty and Sylvia Mosser, presented PCS students with the recognitions and awards. PCS Sophomore Kylie Delaney entered the illustration/poster contest, and won first place honors at the local, state, eastern regional, and national levels. Her entry, entitled, “I want you to remember the sacrifices,” illustrated Uncle Sam wearing a veteran’s poppy. Freshman Maleya Samuelson also won first place honors at all levels for her photo essay entry entitled, “Sewing up the war, one piece at a time.”
Head of school Susan Oweis said, “We are extremely proud of these students. Their work exemplified the spirit of patriotism that we foster here at PCS as well as their own creative interpretations. This was a significant achievement for them.”
Additional PCS students earned honors at the local DAR chapter level for their contest entries: Joshua Garnett, second place; Melani Lewes, third place; and Kelley Petrina, honorable mention.
