VIRGINIA BEACH — Sentara Healthcare plans to invest more than $93 million into cancer treatment and research at a new facility in Norfolk.
The facility will bring together cancer experts from Sentara Medical Group, Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and Virginia Oncology Associates, among other physicians, to “provide compassionate, personalized cancer care,” according to a Sentara news release.
The $93.5 million complex will allow Sentara to accelerate their research, develop new care models, and provide programs designed to help patients transition into life after their cancer treatments, the news release states.
“The Sentara Cancer Center will bring together multidisciplinary care teams to deliver the most innovative and comprehensive cancer care for the Hampton Roads community as well as patients across the region and country,” said Sentara Healthcare President and CEO Howard P. Kern.
The center aims to develop a “truly integrated cancer care program” by bringing together doctors, researchers, community leaders and patients, Kern said.
The outpatient oncology services offered by the new complex will provide patients with a centralized location for multiple appointments and cancer treatments. The ability to facilitate care coordination and collaboration among providers will provide improved efficiency and convenience for patients, according to the release.
“We are excited to see Sentara Healthcare and their medical partners leading the charge to bring a pioneering cancer care center to the Hampton Roads community,” Norfolk Mayor Kenny Alexander said. “The development of this center is a direct reflection of efforts to bolster the region’s growth and economic prosperity.”
Construction on the new cancer center is scheduled to begin in March and projected to be complete by mid-2020.
