EXMORE — Hampton Roads Academy, jumping out to a 28-0 halftime lead, coasted to a 49-22 victory over Broadwater Academy in high school football Saturday at Bynum Field.
The Navigators have overcome a 1-4 season start to pull even a 4-4, while Broadwater dropped to 1-6.
Quarterback Kahleef Jimmison and running back Jalen Norton controlled the first 24 minutes. Jimmison hit Mekhai Russell for a 7-yard scoring pass to cap a 70-yard drive on HRA’s first possession. The sophomore quarterback hit on three passes and had a 15-yard run in the march.
The Newport News school bridged the first and second quarters with a 96-yard drive to make it 14-0. Norton, who chugged 27 yards to get HRA out from its 4, went the final 8 yards.
On its third, and the last of its first-half possessions, HRA picked up 5 first downs and went 80 yards for a 21-0 lead. Norton carried 5 times for 44 of those yards and Jimmison found Nathaniel Bagley for a 6-yard touchdown pass.
Despite there being just 53 seconds left in the half, the Vikings challenged HRA through the air. Brant Bloxom threw for a first down. But when he wound up again, Jimmison cut in front of the intended receiver and raced 57 yards for a final 6-pointer in the first half.
Norton led all rushers with 21 carries for 176 yards and two touchdowns. Jimmison, who contributed 50 yards rushing and a TD, heaved the ball for 166 yards and three scores on 14 of 24 passing.
Lauren Shohan, the first female player at HRA, continued her string of not missing an extra-point kick, making all 7 attempts. The senior, who joined the team at midseason, is 17 of 17.
