NORFOLK — Scammers are using a technique called “spoofing” to make fraudulent calls to residents from hand-picked phone numbers.
A spokesperson from Sentara Healthcare said phone numbers belonging to area hospitals have recently shown up on caller ID displays, but the hospitals aren’t responsible for the calls.
“Spoofing makes people’s caller IDs display a Sentara facility name, but when someone answers the phone, they are subjected to a sales pitch about lower credit card interest, vacation sales or other topics unrelated to Sentara in order to fraudulently obtain your personal financial information,” said Dale Gauding in a news release.
Gauding said that Sentara employees will never request financial information over the phone, and residents should not give out their information to the “spoof” callers.
