Registration will open Saturday for Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center’s full lineup of summer history programs for kids from age 4 through 8th grade.
An array of history camps are slated for June and July which will immerse kids in 17th-century colonial Virginia and the American Revolution through stories, games, crafts and visits to the museums.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore the museum galleries and outdoor living-history areas, including the Powhatan Indian village, 1607 ships and 1610-14 for at Jamestown Settlement and the Continental Army encampment and Revolution-period farm at the Yorktown Victory Center.
Camps at each location are offered according to age group. Kids ages 4 through 6 can take part in two-day Adventure Camps, while kids who have completed first or second grade can opt for the slightly longer three-day Discovery Camps.
Students who have completed third, fourth or fifth grade can enroll in a three-day camp at Jamestown called “The Play’s the Thing: Learning Jamestown’s History Through Art and Literature” or a two-day camp at Yorktown called “Town of York.”
All of these offerings, which fall under the umbrella of the museum’s Broadside program, take place in June and July and fees range from $28 to $56 per camp.
Registration is already open for the School of the Musketeer in July, which is open to students who have completed fourth, fifth, six or seventh grade, and the Museum’s Apprentice program in August, which is open to students who have completed sixth, seventh or eighth grade.
In the School of the Musketeer, kids will have a chance to learn essential survival skills to survive Jamestown in the 17th century, including how to build a fort, cook, sew and soldier, over the course of five days.
The Museum’s Apprentice camp offers participants a chance to go behind the scenes at Jamestown Settlement to learn how a museum operates. Apprentices will work with curators to create their own exhibit at the end of the five-day program.
Capacities for all camps are limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Members of Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Inc. Annual Fund gift clubs – donors of $100 or more – receive a discount.
