YORKTOWN— Just before 8 a.m. this morning, personnel from the York County Fire Department (YCFD) were dispatched to a reported residential trailer fire in the 6300 block of George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17) in the Grafton area.

YCFD said upon arrival, its personnel encountered significant fire conditions, with flames visible from the structure. Firefighters quickly deployed hose lines and conducted interior and exterior attacks, bringing the blaze under control and preventing it from spreading to adjacent properties. The response required the temporary closure of both sides and George Washington Memorial Highway, which was reopened at 8:38 a.m.

YCFD declared the fire was under control at approximately 8:20 a.m. Personnel remained on scene to conduct overhaul operations, extinguishing hotspots and ensuring the fire did not reignite. The fire was marked as fully extinguished at 10 a.m. A representative from Dominion Energy responded to the scene and secured electrical service.

Prior to the arrival of YCFD personnel, the lone occupant of the residence was assisted from the structure by York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office deputies. The individual was subsequently transported by YCFD to a local hospital.

The YCFD says that the resident’s two dogs are unaccounted for.

The trailer sustained significant damage, and the American Red Cross is assisting the displaced resident.

YCFD says that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Traffic control was provided by the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, while fire station backfill support was provided by the Langley AFB Fire Department.

The YCFD reminds residents to ensure working smoke alarms are installed on every level of their home and to have a home escape plan.
