Update: Details Emerge in Grafton Road Rage Incident

GRAFTON — The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office has released more details on a Wednesday road rage incident in the Piccadilly Loop area of Grafton in which a man was shot.

According to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 2 p.m. on April 9, deputies and investigators responded to the Grafton Station Apartment complex for reports of a shooting that had just occurred in the area of Picadilly Loop and Justice Lane.

Upon arrival, deputies located a male victim who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Sheriff’s deputies also located and detained the shooter and secured the firearm that was used in the shooting, the sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff’s Office Investigators arrived on the scene, immediately located witnesses and began collecting evidence, officials said. After conducting their investigation, they determined the shooting was the culmination of a “road rage” incident that began in the George Washington Memorial Highway and Denbigh Boulevard area., and two vehicles were involved.

The victim of the shooting was a passenger in one of the two vehicles involved, which officials said followed the vehicle driven by the shooter into the Grafton Station Apartments complex. When the shooter’s vehicle stopped, the victim exited his vehicle, opened the driver’s side door of the shooter’s vehicle, and began assaulting the driver with his fists. The driver of the vehicle sustained facial and head injuries as a result of this assault. He then grabbed a handgun from the console of the vehicle and shot the male who was assaulting him, the sheriff’s office said, adding witnesses interviewed by investigators verified the sequence of events.

The shooting victim was transported to the hospital and underwent surgery for the gunshot wound. He is in serious condition at this time.

No charges have been filed, and the incident remains under investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
