NORGE — A wanted fugitive with active warrants for violent and drug-related offenses was apprehended Monday in a joint operation between the James City County Police Department and the York Poquoson Sheriff’s Office.
According to James City County officials, JCCPD task force agents and detectives, working in coordination with the York Poquoson Sheriff’s Office apprehended 42-year-old Mondel Brokenberry on March 3 at the Station at Norge apartments in James City County.
Brokenberry was wanted in James City County for Assault and Battery on a Family/Household Member and in the City of Williamsburg for Distributing Schedule I/II Drugs and Failing to Comply With a Court Order related to the drug offense, the county said.
According to officials, JCCPD Tri-Rivers Drug Task Force agents and detectives developed intelligence on Brokenberry’s whereabouts and an operation to take him into custody was coordinated and initiated at approximately 9:30 p.m. on March 3.
At 9:35 p.m., Task Force Agents made contact with Brokenberry as he was walking toward a vehicle within the apartment complex, police said. Brokenberry fled on foot toward a wooded area behind a building, prompting officers to establish a perimeter around the apartment complex and nearby neighborhoods. Police said due to Brokenberry’s violent history and the possibility of being armed, JCCPD and YPSO K-9 Units and JCCPD’s Specialized Response Team Drone Pilots were deployed.
Within two minutes of deployment, a JCCPD Drone Pilot, operating a drone equipped with thermal imaging, located Brokenberry lying in the wooded area, officials said. K-9 teams were directed to his location, and he was taken into custody without incident.
Less than one hour after being located, Brokenberry was transported to Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, police said.
The James City County Police Department commended the coordinated efforts of its Tri-Rivers Drug Task Force agents, Specialized Response Team, Criminal Investigations Unit, Patrol officers, and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office “for their swift and tactical response in safely apprehending a dangerous fugitive.”
