State Police Investigating Fatal Crash Involving Safety Service Patrol Vehicle in James City County

JAMES CITY COUNTY — The Virginia State Police announced it is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash involving a VDOT Safety Service Patrol vehicle that occurred May 29 on Interstate 64 in James City County.

According to police, the accident occurred at 2:03 p.m. at Exit 247 on I-64 eastbound.

Police said a VDOT Safety Service Patrol Vehicle had stopped in the deceleration lane for Exit 247 and turned on its lane closure indicators for a disabled vehicle at the exit. A short time later, police said a 1996 Toyota Camry merged from the eastbound I-64 travel lane into the Exit 247 deceleration lane.

When the Safety Service Patrol driver saw the oncoming vehicle, police said he began to pull away in an attempt to avoid being struck, but was unable to do so.

The impact of the crash caused the Safety Service Patrol vehicle to overturn.

The driver of the Toyota, 79-year-old Louis M. Manning of Midlothian, was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Safety Service Patrol vehicle, 22-year-old Jaquay M. Johnson of Norfolk, suffered minor injuries.

Both were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Police said the crash remains under investigation.
