YORK COUNTY — York County public schools and facilities will be closed Friday because of the threat of tidal flooding, while Poquoson City Public Schools will shift to a virtual learning day.

The York County School Division said in an email to families and staff Thursday that another period of elevated tidal flooding is expected Friday morning and that much of the county remains under a Flood Warning through Friday afternoon.

There will be no remote learning for York County students, according to the email. All school activities and events scheduled for Friday are canceled, and changes to athletic schedules will be announced by individual schools once they’re set.

Road conditions can vary from one part of the county to another, the division said, but because buses travel hundreds of miles of roads each day, decisions must account for conditions across the entire transportation network and the timing of potential impacts.

In Poquoson, school buildings will be closed for students and staff Friday, but students will take part in a virtual learning day, Poquoson City Public Schools stated on its website.

Students will have live online instruction in the morning, followed by a lunch break and independent work in the afternoon. Teachers will be available virtually for support as needed, according to the website.

All in-person extracurricular activities, events and practices scheduled for Friday in Poquoson are canceled.
