YORK COUNTY – Tiffany Ward is a Waller Mill Elementary teacher who describes herself as a “ready-born” educator and says her passion for teaching began long before she ever stepped into a classroom professionally.

“So as a kid, [my cousins and I] we would play school and I was always the teacher,” Ward said. “Nobody else could be the teacher.”

From organizing makeshift classrooms at home to asking her own teachers for extra worksheets, Ward said she “knew since very little” that teaching was her calling. “Ready-born meaning like started early, like knew that I wanted to be a teacher,” she said.

That early sense of purpose has shaped not only her career path but also the environment she creates for her students today.

Growing up in a military family, Ward experienced frequent moves, including time overseas. “I had to move a lot as a little girl,” she said. “It was a lot of back and forth … constantly like a lot of change all the time.”

Those experiences now inform her teaching philosophy, particularly in helping students adapt. She focuses on creating the atmosphere and the classroom environment where people feel safe and understands that change is not always bad.

In the classroom, she emphasizes real-world learning and resilience. “The kids don’t like to make mistakes,” she said. “But mistakes are okay.”

A strong advocate for growth mindset, Ward incorporates activities that build perseverance and confidence. “We do a lot of growth mindset activities,” she said, helping students understand concepts like grit and perseverance and apply them in real time.

Ward’s commitment extends beyond academics to relationships with families and the broader community. From the start of each school year, she sets expectations and maintains connections long after students leave her classroom.

That dedication has contributed to her recognition in the Colossal’s America’s Favorite Teacher competition, where she has reached the top five. While she initially entered with little expectation of winning, she viewed participation itself as an achievement.

“I more did it for me,” she said. “I was like, I kind of already won … just me entering myself in it was a win.”

Tiffany Ward has previously been named Teacher of the Year twice within the York County School Division but said this experience has reinforced her sense of purpose. “It just tells me that I’m where I’m supposed to be,” she said.

If she wins, Ward hopes to invest back into education through a scholarship program focused on literacy. She also highlighted the financial challenges many educators face.

“A lot of the money does come from out of teachers’ pockets,” she said, noting that additional funding would allow her to be “more innovative in the classroom.”

Despite those challenges, student feedback continues to motivate her. Ward recalled a recent moment that stood out.

“I had a kid tell me … ‘I like coming here every day because it’s fun learning,’” she said.

Looking ahead, she hopes her long-term impact will be measured by the connections she builds and the confidence she instills in students. Summing up her mission, she turned to a personal mantra: “I needed a hero, so I became one.”

Voting for group finalists ends today, Thursday, April 23 at 7 p.m. PDT. If you would like to follow Ward’s journey, visit americasfavteacher.org/2026/tiffany-ward
