YORK COUNTY— The York County School Board officially adopted its proposed 2027 operating budget at their meeting earlier this week.

The budget came in at $205,985,675. According to the board, 4.9% of the budget addresses needs in the administration, attendance, and health category, 5.6% will be sent to pupil transportation, 6.8% will go towards technology, 8.1% will go towards operations and maintenance, and 74.6% will go towards instruction.

Capital Improvement Projects planned for FY2027 include a bus loop, additional parking spaces at Dare Elementary and its School Board Office, replacement of the Dare Elementary gym HVAC system, replacement of Bruton High’s HVAC equipment and controls, a Geothermal Conversion and HVAC Renovation and Electrical Upgrade at Tabb High School, and the addition of modular classrooms division-wide.

“I’m pleased that our Board has adopted all my recommendations for next year’s budget and that we have no budget gap using the working number that York County supplied.  While there are still challenges ahead, I am hopeful that the final State budget allows opportunity to pledge additional funds to staff compensation in our final budget,” Dr. James Carroll, York County Schools superintendent, said.

The budget passed 4-1, with district five board member Lynda Fairman being the sole no vote.

After Monday night’s meeting and the proposed budget adoption, the budget will now be sent to the York County Board of Supervisors for consideration and allocation of funding. Once the county budget is approved by the Board of Supervisors, the School Board adopts the final annual spending plan.

The adoption of the final budget is currently scheduled for May 18.
