WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg-James City County School Board unanimously named Daniel F. Keever as its superintendent at its meeting Tuesday, effective June 1.
The announcement follows a months-long nationwide search and multi-stage interview process, according to WJCC Schools. More than 40 applications for the position were received.
Applicants were evaluated in the context of the division’s strategic plan, student achievement goals, and candidate profile as defined by community stakeholders, it said, adding Keever emerged as a top candidate at each stage.
“After a thorough and thoughtful process, we are confident that Dr. Keever brings the vision, experience, and leadership we need to build on our current successes and incorporate new ideas to drive future growth,” said Sarah G. Ortego, WJCC Schools Board Chair. “Dr. Keever’s performance throughout the interview process stood out consistently among a highly qualified pool of candidates. Dr. Keever offers the unique combination of fresh perspective and established relationships that will allow him to efficiently effectuate change.”
Keever joined WJCC Schools in 2020 and served as Deputy Superintendent since 2023,
“I am honored by the continued trust and confidence placed in me by the school board and am excited for the opportunity ahead to continue working collaboratively with our students, staff, families, and the community to build on our successes and champion the success of every student,” Keever said. “WJCC Schools has a rich history of excellence, shaped by dedicated educators, engaged families, and a connected community. I look forward to building on that strong foundation while bringing a fresh perspective and energy to help us meet the evolving needs of our students, together.”
Prior to joining WJCC Schools, Keever served as Senior Executive Director for High Schools at Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Keever’s 30-year career in public education also includes experience as a school security officer, teacher, instructional specialist, assistant principal and principal, the division said.
Keever will officially assume the superintendent position on June 1. He has served as acting superintendent since Feb. 1, a position he was named to in October following the announcement of Olwen Herron’s retirement at the end of the year.
