HAMPTON ROADS — Drive Safe Hampton Roads is offering free or reduced Lyft ride-shares to impaired drivers throughout Hampton Roads on Super Bowl Sunday.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2022, one person was killed every 39 minutes in a drunk-driving crash and there were 13,524 alcohol-impaired fatalities.
In Hampton Roads on Super Bowl Sunday 2023, there were 163 crashes, 94 injuries, and 3 fatalities. In an effort to reduce injuries and fatalities in Hampton Roads, DSHR promotes the 757 Sober Ride campaign for rides originating and/or for destinations in Hampton Roads.
“It is critical that anyone heading out to a bar or party for the Big Game to plan for a sober ride to arrive home safely,” said Bob Clinebell, President of Drive Safe Hampton Roads. “Make smart choices, always plan on how you’re going to get home safely once the celebration ends. Impaired driving is deadly, and no one should ever take that risk.”
Drive Safe Hampton Roads (DSHR) is sponsoring 757 Sober Ride from 8 p.m. from Sunday, Feb. 9 until 3 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 10. During that seven-hour period, area residents 21 and older celebrating with alcohol and/or drugs can download the Lyft app to their phones, and enter the 757 Sober Ride code in the app’s “Payment” tab (under the “Add Lyft Pass” option) when they are ready to receive their no-cost (up to $15) safe transportation home.
The code will only work if used during the specified seven-hour period for rides originating from or having a destination within Hampton Roads.
DSHR’s 757 Sober Ride promo code will be posted at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9, at DriveSafeHR.org/757-sober-ride. The offer is valid while supplies last and is subject to Lyft’s Terms of Service.
“If you are the designated driver, commit to 100% sobriety to keep you and your friends safe. If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement immediately. Doing so could save your life, your passengers’ lives, and others on the road,” said Clinebell. “And, if you have a friend who is about to drive impaired, take away their keys and help them make arrangements to get them home safely — it will be the greatest gift you could ever give them. We want everyone to enjoy the fun, no matter which team you root for!”
Supporters of the 2025 757 Sober Ride campaign include Huffman & Huffman Brothers in Law and the Virginia DMV.
