RICHMOND — Virginia tax filing season officially opened Monday, Jan. 27 and Virginia Tax said taxpayers are now able to file their individual income tax returns.

“We strongly recommend electronic filing,” said Tax Commissioner James J. Alex. “It’s the faster, safer option for taxpayers. We also recommend you request your refund, if you have one coming, via direct deposit.”

Virginia Tax said it takes refund fraud seriously and encourages taxpayers to do the same, noting its automated system reviews returns for suspicious activity or possible fraud, and then employees manually evaluate the returns selected for review. Filing early helps ensure the fastest possible refund if a return is selected for review, it said.

Virginia Tax offers steps taxpayers can take to help make sure returns and refunds aren’t delayed:

  • Gather all W-2s, 1099s and other withholding information before filing a return
  • Include a Virginia driver’s license or Virginia identification card number on the return. Returns that don’t have that information won’t be rejected, but providing it helps Virginia Tax process the return more quickly
  • Be sure the spelling of name(s), Social Security number(s) and all calculations are correct
  • If a taxpayer has moved since filing their last return, use the current address
  • For secure, online self-service, create and log onto an online individual account

This allows taxpayers to track returns or refunds. Taxpayers can also check the status of their refund by using the Where’s My Refund application on the Virginia Tax website, or by calling 804-367-2486.
