Thomas E. Chavez (Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation)

WILLIAMSBURG — The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation announced its popular Director’s Series kicks off its 2025 season on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Jamestown Settlement.

Prolific historian and author Thomas E. Chávez will explore Spanish America and its intersections in the fight for American independence.

In his conversation with Christy S. Coleman, executive director of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Chávez will reveal the secret diplomatic moves and behind-the-scenes alliances that helped win the Revolutionary War.

Chávez, a former executive director of the National Hispanic Culture Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the Palace of the Governors State History Museum in Santa Fe, is the author of numerous books and articles, including his forthcoming book, “Revolutionary Diplomacy: Spanish Statecraft and the Birth of the United States.”

The program, held at 7 p.m. in Jamestown Settlement’s Robins Foundation Theater, is $10 and available in-person or virtually or $50 for the entire series. Admission is limited and tickets must be purchased online in advance. Tickets can be purchased at jyfmuseums.org/directorsseries.

Now in its fourth year, the Director’s Series features conversations with prominent scholars and public figures about shared legacies of American history.

Programs last year featured Ruth E. Carter, Academy Award-winning American costume designer; Joseph M. McGill Jr., author and founder of the Slave Dwelling Project; and Aimee R. Guidera, Secretary of Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
