NEWPORT NEWS — Christopher Newport University fifth-year senior Jahn Hines picked up another honor from the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference on Monday. Hines, a three-time All-American, was selected the Player of the Week in the conference for the third time this season.
The Norfolk native led the Captains to an 83-76 victory over top-ranked and undefeated Emory University Saturday at the Freeman Center. The Norfolk native scored a team-high 19 points, including four key points in the final two-and-a-half minutes. Hines also pulled down four rebounds, dished out four assists, posted four steals, and blocked two shots as the 18th-ranked Captains improved to 13-3 on the season, and the previously-unbeaten Eagles fell to 10-1.
Hines moved into sixth place on CNU’s all-time scoring list during the impressive victory, passing Tra Benefield on the list. He has now scored 1,796 career points in 110 games as a Captain (an average of 16.3 points per game for his career). Hines is currently 25 points behind Conley Taylor for fifth place on the all-time list.
The weekly conference honor is the 15th won by Hines over his outstanding career, and it’s his second weekly accolade in a row. Only former CNU cross country runner Aimee Gibbs won more conference Player of the Week honors during her CNU career. Gibbs captured the award 16 times.
Christopher Newport has now won four straight games, and the Captains begin a string of four straight road contests on Wednesday night at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. Tip-off time is set for 6:00 p.m.
