WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary freshman Isaiah Mbeng was named the CAA Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Mbeng helped lead the Tribe to a 2-0 start to the CAA slate. He averaged 11 points, four assists, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game, while shooting 53.3% from the field and 71.4% (5-of-7) from 3-point range in the victories at Hofstra and Stony Brook. He is the first Tribe rookie to win the honor since the 2022-23 season.
In W&M’s win 83-76 win at Stony Brook on Saturday, Mbeng erupted for a career-high 15 points to lead the Tribe. He connected on 5-of-8 shooting, including a career-best 4-of-6 from 3-point range. His 3-pointer with 1:17 remaining beat the shot clock and provided the dagger, increasing W&M’s lead to three possessions, 80-73. Mbeng added three assists and three steals vs. the Seawolves.
Mbeng turned in a strong stat line in the Tribe’s CAA-opening win at Hofstra. He tallied seven points, a career-high tying five assists and three rebounds as W&M topped the Pride, 74-56.
On the year, the Potomac, Md., native is averaging 6.1 points per game off the bench and leads the Tribe in assists (3.0) and steals (1.4). He ranks among the CAA leaders, coming in third in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.5), seventh in steals, and 11th in assists.
Mbeng and the Tribe return to action when they welcome Elon to Kaplan Arena on Thursday night at 7 p.m. for a battle of 2-0 CAA teams. The contest will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network with John Fanta and John Giannini on the call.
