One Dead in Early Morning I-64 Crash

NEWPORT NEWS — A 22-year-old man died and all lanes of Interstate 64 were blocked early Monday morning after a car struck a tractor-trailer.

According to the Virginia State Police, the two-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 3 a.m. on I-64 westbound at the 247-mile marker in Newport News.

According to police, a preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, Denzel Owuraku Quaicoo of Woodbridge, was traveling westbound on I-64 when he ran off the roadway and struck a 2023 International tractor-trailer that was stopped on the closed shoulder.

Quaicoo died on impact. A female passenger was trapped inside the vehicle and suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. The passenger was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured.

VDOT rerouted traffic at the 250-mile marker. All lanes were open at approximately 9:19 a.m.
