Colonial Parkway Rehabilitation to Close Parkway Between Williamsburg Circle to North England Street

The Colonial Parkway from Williamsburg Circle to North England Street will be closed to local traffic and Colonial Williamsburg buses on or about July 22, the city of Williamsburg said.

There are no new detour routes in place as a result of this closure, and existing detour routes to and from Jamestown and the Williamsburg Visitor Center and to and from Yorktown and the Williamsburg Visitor Center will remain in place. Variable message signs (VMS) and other signage in the area will also provide detour route information and guidance.

Williamsburg Circle will fully close in late 2024 and reopen in Spring 2026, however, this schedule may change due to weather or other unforeseen conditions.

Abram Frink Jr. Community Center Temporarily Closes For Maintenance

The Abram Frink Jr. Community Center at 8901 Pocahontas Trail in Grove, will be closed Wednesday, July 31 through Monday, Aug. 12 for gym floor maintenance. The Frink Center will reopen Monday, Aug. 12.

During the closure, all active Frink Center pass holders may use the James City County Recreation Center during normal operating hours, Monday-Friday, the county said.

York County Fire and Life Safety Recognized by the American Heart Association with National Award

Earlier this month, York County’s Department of Fire and Life Safety was recognized by the American Heart Association as recipient of the Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold achievement award, a national award that recognizes pre-hospital agencies for excellence in heart attack and stroke care, the county announced.

“As Fire Chief, I am exceptionally proud of the men and women who serve our community and who directly care for our citizens and visitors. This award is reflective of the extraordinary work that they do each and every day,” said Stephen P. Kopczynski, Fire Chief and Director of Fire and Life Safety.

The recognition program was launched in 2014 to celebrate the achievement of the prehospital providers and their collaboration with each other and hospitals specific to patient care. The Mission: Lifeline EMS achievement award focuses on agencies’ on-scene care, bringing to the forefront the collaboration and contributions to patient care for prehospital providers.

York County Named a 2024 Top Digital County

York County has been named one of the nation’s top digital counties by The Center for Digital Government (CDG) and the National Association of Counties (NACo), it announced York County placed second in the category of counties with a population of 150,000 or less.

York County said it moved from third place in 2023 to second place this year due in part to:

  1. Successful launch of our modern tax software solution, Avenity CountyOne.
  2. Citizen accessible tools such as the GIS Dashboard
  3. The Budget Shorts video series
  4. State-of-the-Art technology in new Law Enforcement Building
  5. Collaboration with IT departments state-wide on legislation

According to a CDG and NACo joint press release, the survey “identifies the best technology practices among U.S. counties, including initiatives that streamline delivery of government services; provide data analytics to allow decisions based on performance and outcomes; enhance cybersecurity; and apply innovative and emerging technologies to county priorities.”

Tournament for Charity at Ford’s Colony Country Club

The James City Lions Club is hosting its annual Charity Golf Tournament on Friday, Sept 13, at Ford’s Colony Country Club, 240 Fords Colony Drive, Williamsburg.

Proceeds will support the Club’s many charitable programs, including vision and hearing screenings, local hunger relief, environmental causes and student scholarships.

Tee times begin at 8 a.m. Registration includes golf cart, range balls, goody bag and box lunch with refreshment choice. Individuals and foursomes are encouraged to register. The individual registration fee is $125, the fee for a foursome is $500. The deadline to register is Sept. 1.

Grove Christian Outreach Center Seeks Sleigh Hunger Volunteers

Grove Christian Outreach Center is seeking volunteers for its Sleigh Hunger food drive put together by Grove, the Habitat Williamsburg ReStore, and Williamsburg House of Mercy. It is a drive-thru food drive, meaning the donors drive through and drop off the food, and will once again be hosted at the ReStore located at 1303 Jamestown Road.

Items needed include the following:

  • Hot and Cold Cereal
  • Rice
  • Canned or Mashed Potatoes
  • Stuffing
  • Spaghetti Sauce
  • Pasta
  • Canned or Cups of Fruit
  • Cans of Tuna, Chicken, Protein
  • Juice

Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court Deputy Clerks Receive 2023 Exceptional Leadership Award

The Deputy Clerks for the Williamsburg/James City County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court were recently honored with the 2023 Exceptional Leadership Award of the Year in recognition of exemplary performance and outstanding services to the Virginia Court System.

Amanda Robinson, Rachel Iczkovitz, Lenora Coe, Sherry Catron and Sandy Berdecia-Rodriguez responded to medical emergency in the courthouse when a customer had a seizure and fell, hitting their head. The customer began to choke and was bleeding profusely. The Deputy Clerks immediately provided first aid and kept the customer calm until the EMS arrived.

As a result of this incident, the Clerk’s Office organized training for all courthouse staff through the When the Trumpet Sounds organization that provides education about epilepsy and how to respond in the event of an emergency.

The Honorable Shea Bruno, Clerk of Court and the Honorable Judge Brian J. Smalls submitted the nomination to the Association of Clerks of the District Courts of Virginia Recognition Program.

Historical Commission Presents winners of Student Essay Writing Contest

On June 25, the James City County Historical Commission presented the winners of its essay contest for high school students within the Williamsburg-James City County (WJCC) Public School System at the James City County Board of Supervisors meeting.

Mark Jakobowski, Chairman of the Historical Commission, presented the awards.

  • First Place — Aubrey Pecota, Homeschooled
  • Second Place — Emily Reynolds, Lafayette High School
  • Third Place — Kaleigh Alexis Campbell, Homeschooled

This year’s essay topics were The Railroad, African American Schools, and Lady Frances Berkeley. The contest offered prizes of $1,500 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place. Ten members of the Historical Commission served as judges and evaluated the essay (with identifying information removed) based on a formal rubric that accompanied the essay contest rules.

The mission of the James City County Historical Commission is to further the efforts of the County to document, commemorate, preserve, protect, and promote the rich historical heritage of James City County.
