Juneteenth Closures Around the Historic Triangle

HISTORIC TRIANGLE — On June 17, 2021, President Joseph Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act creating June 19 as a national holiday. This year, Juneteenth will be observed Wednesday. Here is how local offices and services are impacted by the holiday.

James City County

James City County announced that offices, facilities, services, libraries and courts will observe the following schedule for Juneteenth, June 19:

County Offices:
Closed.

James City County Recreation Center and Abram Frink Jr. Community Center:
Open.

Parks:
All County parks are open year-round.

Park Stores and Guest Services Offices:
Open.

Tewning Road, Jolly Pond Road and Toano Convenience Centers:
Open.

Garbage Transfer Station:
Open.

Curbside Recycling:
No change.

Libraries:
Closed.

Courts:
Closed.

Williamsburg

The City of Williamsburg said offices will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. This includes all offices in the Municipal Building on Lafayette Street. 

Quarterpath Recreation Center will remain open on June 19, it said, and Waller Mill Park will follow normal operating hours, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. 

The city said that for water emergencies after hours, weekends, and holidays, residents should call 757-220-2331. More information can be found at williamsburgva.gov/publicworks. 

Those who need to pay a bill when offices are closed are urged to use the 24-hour bill payment dropbox located at the front of the Municipal Building at 401 Lafayette St. for city transactions. Payments can also be made online. The city notes dropbox payments made on Wednesday, June 19 will not be posted until Thursday, June 20.

York County

According to York County, the following government offices and courts will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday:

  • County government Offices and Courts
  • York-Poquoson Social Services
  • Virginia Cooperative Extension
  • York County Libraries
  • Waste Management Center Administrative Office

The county said garbage and recycling are not affected by the holiday. Residents are reminded to place their trash and recycling containers at the roadside by 7 a.m. on their regular collection day.

The Transfer Station, Recycling Drop-off, and VPPSA Compost Facility located at the Waste Management Center will be open, the county said. Citizens needing assistance are reminded to submit requests via the Customer Service Request Portal — yorkcounty.gov/requests. For more information on the Waste Management schedule, call 757-890-3780.
