JAMES CITY COUNTY — A pedestrian struck by a truck early Sunday morning on the 7200 block of Richmond Road was removed from life support on the afternoon of Dec. 26 and succumbed to his injuries.
Joshua Barkley, 19 years old at the time of the incident, turned 20 on Dec. 25, police said.
According to officials, James City County Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene of the accident near Noah’s Ark Veterinary Hospital at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 24.
Police said an initial investigation revealed that the 19-year-old Newport News resident was retrieving personal belongings from the roadway and unaware of an approaching 2021 Freightliner truck, without a trailer attached, that was traveling eastbound. The driver attempted to avoid the pedestrian but was unsuccessful.
After receiving initial life-saving treatment from emergency personnel, the teen was airlifted to VCU Medical Center in critical condition, officials said.
As of Dec. 24, an ongoing investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. Charges against the truck driver were not anticipated, according to officials.
