YORK COUNTY — The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office announced a man has been charged in the assault of a special needs student Thursday at Grafton Middle School.

According to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, on Nov. 2, a Grafton Middle School administrator reported to the Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer that a 12-year-old special needs student had been assaulted by an adult at the school.

The School Resource Officer initiated an investigation into the allegations and after interviewing all of the parties involved, including the victim and witnesses, obtained warrants for the school employee, 54-year-old George Hyde of Yorktown, a substitute paraeducator.

Hyde was charged with three counts of Assault and Battery, each a Class 1 misdemeanor, one count of Cruelty to a Child, and one count of Maiming — both Class 6 felonies.
