AARP Virginia: Open Enrollment Season Means Medicare Scams
With open enrollment season giving eligible beneficiaries until Dec. 7 to shop for the best deal for their health care, AARP Virginia is warning that some of the deals offered won’t be deals at all.
The organization warns that as in previous years, Medicare scams spike during open enrollment season, with criminals posing as insurance providers calling and emailing about free gifts or limited time offers — ploys designed to capture information criminals can use to bill Medicare for bogus services and treatment.
AARP Virginia cautions to be suspicious of anyone who calls, emails or visits promoting a Medicare plan, noting legitimate health plans can only contact you if you’ve requested information or if you have an existing relationship with them. It adds to always review your Medicare or explanation of benefits statement to ensure fraudulent charges aren’t included.
The AARP Fraud Watch Network is a free resource. Learn how to proactively spot scams or get guidance if you’ve been targeted. Visit aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork or call AARP’s dedicated helpline to speak to a fraud specialist at 1-877-908-3360.

Governor Signs Legislation Extending State Tax-Exemptions to All Military Retirees

Gov. Glenn Youngkin recently celebrated extended tax-exemptions for military retirement pay through the removal of age restrictions in the 2023 Virginia state budget. After enacting a state tax exemption for military retirement pay in 2022, this expanded benefit will apply to all military retirees regardless of age and takes effect in the taxable year beginning Jan. 1.
“With the support of the members of the Virginia General Assembly from both sides of the aisle, I was pleased to provide additional tax relief to our vast number of military retirees that call Virginia home. Reducing the tax burden on military retirees was a promise we made early on, and we were able to deliver. After commendable years of service and sacrifice, our Virginia veterans deserve the best treatment,” said Gov. Glenn Youngkin. “As governor, I’m working to make Virginia the No. 1 state in America for veterans and military retirees to live, work, and raise a family.”
