JAMES CITY COUNTY — James City County and Kingsmill Police departments responded to a two-vehicle fatal accident on Mounts Bay Road Friday morning near the intersection with Randolph’s Green.
According to James City County Police Department (JCCPD), the initial investigation determined a 2021 Hyundai Venue traveling westbound on Mounts Bay Road crossed the center lane and struck a 2016 Honda Civic head-on. Both vehicles had single occupants, and both drivers required immediate medical attention.
The driver of the Venue, 68-year-old Gail Sweeney of James City County, was unresponsive at the scene. JCCPD and Kingsmill Police Department officers successfully performed CPR and life-saving measures until medical personnel arrived. Sweeney was transported from the scene to the Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News and passed away later that day. The cause and manner of death are under investigation.
The driver of the Civic was also taken to Riverside Regional Hospital and is reported to have non-life-threatening injuries, JCCPD said.
Police said preliminary information suggests that neither speed nor alcohol contributed to this crash, but a medical event may have been the cause.
All lanes of Mounts Bay Road were shut down for approximately two hours because of the incident.
The crash remains under investigation.
