
Free Budgeting 101 Workshop Scheduled
James City County’s Office of Housing is offering a free workshop on Budgeting 101 on Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. The one-hour workshop will provide tips and resources for understanding paychecks, best methods for tracking expenses and low cost energy saving tips for homeowners and renters. Participants can attend in person at the James City County Human Services Center, 5249 Olde Towne Rd., or virtually on Zoom. See Concept Plans for the Water Street Area Master Plan
York County has contracted with the consulting group Hill Studio to develop a master plan for the portion of Water Street located between the Yorktown Pub and the Yorktown Beach Hotel. Representatives from Hill Studio will present concept plans and receive public input via Zoom Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m., offering a chance to give feedback on their ideas for landscaping, parking, public access, and trash removal.

Those who cannot attend but want to share opinions on the project can email planning@yorkcounty.gov. After the meeting, the concepts will be available here for review until March 1. Hill Studio will then make any changes to the concepts based on input before presenting them to the Board of Supervisors. Firearms Class Offered to the Public by Police
The James City County Police Department is offering community members a free firearm safety course. The one-session class will cover fundamental topics, including firearm safety, handling, storage, and laws related to carrying a concealed handgun in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Project ChildSafe will also provide free gunlocks to participants. This course does not include hands-on training, all personal firearms should be left at home in a secure location. The training is open to all ages. Classes will take place at the Law Enforcement Center at 4600 Opportunity Way. Class sizes are limited to 20 participants. Pre-registration is required to ensure a seat.

Operation Smile is Recognized through Virginia State Senate Joint Resolution
Global surgical nonprofit Operation Smile was recognized for outstanding achievements in improving the health and well-being of patients in communities all around the world through a Virginia State Senate Joint Resolution Wednesday, Feb. 15. These achievements involve building local surgical capacity, increasing access to reconstructive surgery to repair cleft lip and cleft palate conditions and providing comprehensive cleft care resources for families facing barriers to quality health care.
The Virginia State Senate presented Operation Smile co-founders Dr. Bill Magee and Kathy Magee with Joint Resolution No. 308, commending Operation Smile on changing more than 346,000 lives with ongoing surgical and dental care since the organization’s inception in 1982. Presented by Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears, the resolution acknowledges the General Assembly’s appreciation and admiration for Operation Smile’s global impact and service.
Colonial Williamsburg Youth Volunteer Expo
Colonial Williamsburg is expanding its Youth Volunteer Programs. Opportunities are available in the following areas:
- Historic Area Patriots at Play (ages 12-18), summer
- Historic Trades and Skills (ages 12-18), year-round
- Fifes and Drums (age 10-11), year-round
Staff and volunteers from participating programs will be available to discuss these opportunities at the expo, Saturday, March 11 from 1-5 p.m. at Woodlands Conference Center 159 Visitor Center Drive Williamsburg, Virginia. Hampton Roads Academy presents ‘The Wizard of Oz’

City of Williamsburg Launches Cybersecurity Training Pilot Program
The City of Williamsburg has launched a Resident Cybersecurity Training, a free pilot program that teaches residents how to raise their awareness of cybersecurity threats. The program uses a course from KnowBe4, an industry leader in helping organizations train employees on how to identify internet security risks. The Resident Cybersecurity Training focuses on home internet security threats. An interest form for the Resident Cybersecurity Training pilot program can be found at williamsburgva.gov/cybersecurity. A limited number of people can participate in the pilot program, and only City of Williamsburg residents will be accepted. Those accepted will receive an email from the City of Williamsburg with further instructions on how to take the free training course at home.
