YORK COUNTY — The York County Board of Supervisors approved a $1.8 million contract to move forward with a new Dockmaster building at its Aug. 6 meeting.

The approval authorizes the York County Administrator to execute a contract with GC Commercial Inc. for design-build services. Funds for the project were appropriated in the York County Capital Improvement Plan.

“What we’re doing here and what you’re approving today is the award of a contract to construct a Dockmaster building to replace the old dilapidated structure which constitutes the existing bathrooms. which are deteriorating on multiple levels and are not all weather and are not ADA accessible,” explained Department of Economic and Tourism Development Deputy Director Darren Williams.

“Then getting rid of the existing Dockmaster space, which comprises approximately three 50 square feet of office space to perform multiple functions such as dock master operations, parking ambassadors, event support staff, freight support staff and any other operation staff that operates out of the waterfront,” he added.

The two current buildings, located on Water Street, will be demolished to make way for an 1, 874-square-foot public-approved single-story building that will house the dockmaster’s office and guest and support services spaces while also meeting Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) code for accessible bathrooms.

Major construction is expected to be completed in the off-season.

“We’re gonna look to move at a lightning pace and try to get demolition started the week after Labor Day, if possible,” Williams said at the meeting.
