HAMPTON ROADS — Drive Safe Hampton Roads, a nonprofit regional coalition whose mission is to improve highway safety, and reduce injuries and deaths from vehicle crashes, is sponsoring two 757 Sober Ride campaigns for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
The first is from 5 p.m., Sunday, May 26 to 2 a.m., Monday, May 27 and the second is from 5 p.m., Monday, May 27 to 2 a.m., Tuesday, May 28 .
According to Drive Safe Hampton Roads (DSHR), the 14 weeks from Memorial Day to Labor Day have “earned the grim title of the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer.” The organization says it is essential for those celebrating to arrange a sober ride home and to use Drive Safe HR’s 757 Sober Ride powered by Lyft.
Area residents age 21 and older celebrating with alcohol may download the Lyft app to their phones, then enter the 757 Sober Ride code in the app’s “Payment” tab located under the “Add Lyft Pass” option to receive their no-cost (up to $15) safe transportation home.
The code will only work if used during the above-stated timeframes for rides originating from or having a destination within Hampton Roads. DSHR’s Memorial Sunday 757 Sober Ride promo code will be posted at 5 p.m. Sunday with Memorial Day’s 757 Sober Ride promo code being posted at 5 p.m. on Monday, at DriveSafeHR.org/757-
According to the Virginia State Police, the 2023 Memorial Day weekend proved deadly for nine drivers and passengers, including four motorcyclists, DSHR said.
“Impaired drivers can face jail time, and the financial impact is devastating. On average, a DUI can set you back $10,000 in attorney’s fees, fines, court costs, lost time at work, higher insurance rates, car towing, and more. If you are the designated driver, commit to 100% sobriety to keep you and your friends safe. If you plan to drink, please don’t drive. Be smart, plan ahead, and use 757 Sober Ride to get home safely. The life you save may be your own, or someone you love.” said Jonathan Turner, 757 Sober Ride Chairperson.
Supporters of the 2024 757 Sober Ride campaign include Huffman & Huffman Brothers-in-Law, the Christopher King Foundation, and the Virginia DMV.
