Two Providence Classical School students had the privilege of going to Orlando, Florida, to participate in Destination Broadway in July!
Destination Broadway is the premier musical theatre intensive for aspiring performers ages 8-18. For over 19 years, 4,000-plus talented students from across the country have gathered for this exclusive and unique one-week experience. Invitations are extended only after auditions.
This singular opportunity exposes students to daily training with Broadway stars, Broadway music directors, Broadway choreographers and then perform for Broadway and Disney casting directors and talent agents.
Mrs. Tiffany Haas, a PCS parent, is the Artistic Director for Destination Broadway and is also a Broadway performer, concert vocalist, passionate entrepreneur and author. Sharing her exuberance for the performing arts with youth in a tangible way has allowed Mrs. Haas to come full circle in the field and help the next generation.
“I was just like the students who attend my program. I absolutely loved performing and knew that I wanted a career working professionally on Broadway,” she says. “That was the dream! After 25 years working on Broadway, National Tours, Symphony stages, regional theatres, I love helping serious students take their passion and their skills to the next level while making invaluable connections with top industry professionals. Unlike many career paths that have a direct or obvious path, musical theatre does not. That is where Destination Broadway comes in! It is most certainly the opportunity of a lifetime!”
Our two PCS student-attendees, Sara Smith and Charis McTurnal, had theatrical performances under their belts prior to attending the intensive, having led starring roles in recent school productions, including “Annie Jr.” and “Anastasia.”
Charis found the most valuable lesson of the experience to be, “You don’t need to compare yourself and try to fix all of your “mistakes.” You just need to be you and know that the casting directors are wanting to know YOU, not a carbon copy of everyone else.”
For Sara, the most valuable part of Destination Broadway was, “… meeting many people I have seen on TV, Broadway, Disney+, for example. They all had such amazing attitudes with us and showed much interest for the industry.”
When asked if they learned anything in particular that they would apply in their lives, whether on or off stage, Sara really appreciated the importance of thoroughly playing the character, “This camp really taught me to play into the characters’ perspective of things and to just have fun.”
Meanwhile, Charis concluded, “Having a good attitude is the key that opens all doors!”
We look forward to seeing Sara, Charis, and other students in our PCS community in upcoming stage productions this year! At PCS, we believe in nurturing the whole student — mind, heart, and soul. A vibrant Performing Arts Program is essential to our mission, allowing students to cultivate creativity, confidence and a deeper appreciation for beauty.
The mission of Providence Classical School is to provide a classical, Christ-centered education, equipping students with a thorough biblical world and life view, that captures their affections and enables them to discern, articulate and live truth. pcsvirginia.org
