From downward dogs to putting for pups, Greater Williamsburg animal lovers have plenty of ways to support homeless pets while having fun throughout the rest of the summer and into autumn. The Heritage Humane Society invites the community to turn good times into good deeds with a lineup of pet-friendly, family-focused events. Each gathering helps fund vital care for hundreds of animals awaiting their forever homes at the region’s largest animal shelter.
Aug. 9: Kids Movie Night
Let the kids enjoy a night out while supporting a great cause at Kids Movie Night at Heritage Humane Society on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Kids will enjoy popcorn, pizza, educational crafts and the new Lilo & Stitch movie while parents enjoy a night off. Cost is $20 per child. Spots fill quickly!
Aug. 16: Dog Yoga
Unwind, stretch and smile at Dog Yoga on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 8:30 a.m. in the shelter’s community classroom. Led by instructor Cameron Green, this beginner-friendly class is a $20 donation per person and includes time to interact with adorable adoptable dogs from The Heritage Humane Society. All ages and all levels are welcome. Registration is required to secure a spot.
Aug. 16: Paws in the Air
Get ready to rock for a great cause at Paws in the Air on Saturday, Aug. 16, at Legacy Hall in New Town! This lively evening event features live music by crowd favorite Murfee’s Law, plus food, beer, raffles, local vendors and tail-wagging fun for all. Proceeds benefit the McDuff Endowment Fund, which provides lifesaving medical care for the homeless pets of The Heritage Humane Society. This feel-good night helps pets get the second chance they deserve. Tickets are on sale now!
Sept. 7: Drool in the Pool
Let Fido take one last splash before pool season ends! Drool in the Pool, the absolute splashiest end-of-summer event, will be at the James City County Parks & Recreation’s Chickahominy Riverfront Park on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s a wet and wild good time where dogs can perfect their belly flops, socialize while swimming or delight in being spectators.
Sept. 12: Make Par for Pets Golf Classic
Where competition is as powerful as camaraderie, Greater Williamsburg’s buzziest charity golf event is an annual favorite for golfers and pet lovers alike. Tee off for tails at the Make Par for Pets Golf Classic on Friday, Sept. 12 at Kingsmill Resort. Enjoy 18 holes, breakfast, lunch, a raffle and heartwarming moments — all to help save lives. Registration is open for golfers, sponsors and raffle donations.
Sept. 28: Create a Stained Glass Framed Mosaic Art Piece — NEW!
New for The Heritage Humane Society, this is a popular class at the Norfolk Botanical Garden and at Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. Held at the shelter’s community classroom, in this stained glass framed mosaic art workshop, make an 8×10 framed glass on glass mosaic art piece while learning the basic techniques of cutting, assembling, attaching and grouting under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Dive into the mosaic art process while exploring the many possibilities of found and reclaimed glass.
Every Event Helps Save Lives
The Heritage Humane Society cares for more than 2,000 pets each year. These events offer the community joyful ways to give back — because every yoga pose with pups and every golf swing for a cause helps make second chances possible for animals in need right here in Greater Williamsburg.
Adoptable Pets are Ready to Find Their Fur-ever Home
Welcoming a new furry (or not-so-furry) friend is proven to enrich the lives of both pet and people. Today, 300 dogs, cats and small pets are in the shelter’s care and hoping to find their forever homes. Adoptable pets are available to meet during The Heritage Humane Society’s visiting and adopting hours from noon to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.
