It’s time to grab running shoes, leash up furry friends, and head to one of the most heartwarming races of the year! The countdown is on for the Sixth Annual FURever Homes Race, a heartwarming community event supporting local homeless pets. Hosted by The Heritage Humane Society, the event takes place on Saturday, June 14, and promises a morning filled with fitness, festivities, and furry friends — all for a great cause.
Three Race Options Plus Virtual Participation
Participants of all experience levels can choose from:
- 8k Race – Part of the Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix series
- 5k Race
- 1-Mile Fun Run
- Virtual Race for those unable to attend in person
All races begin and end at Jamestown High School, with routes including scenic sections of the Greensprings Trail and Capital Trail.

Canine Companions Welcome on the Course
Leashed dogs are invited to take part in the 5k and 1-mile Fun Run alongside their handlers. To ensure a safe experience for all:
- Dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations
- Non-retractable leashes only will be permitted
The event is an opportunity for pets and people to enjoy the outdoors while helping shelter animals find permanent homes.
Vendor Village, Music, Raffles & More
A lively Vendor Village will open at 7 a.m. in the Jamestown High School parking lot, featuring local businesses, food, music, raffles, and family-friendly activities.
- Music will be provided by 92.3FM The Tide and Cannon Country 107.9FM
- Sweet Ellie Photography will capture event moments, with a free photo album available afterward via The Heritage Humane Society’s website and Facebook.
- Water for participants will be supplied by Water Sponsor Spoke + Art Provisions Co.

Proceeds from the FURever Homes Race will benefit the mission of The Heritage Humane Society, providing essential care, shelter, and adoption services for pets in need throughout the Greater Williamsburg community.

Raffle donations are also being accepted, with all proceeds benefiting the care of the community shelter’s homeless pets.

Adoptable Pets are Ready Today to Join the Race
Spring days are ideal for walking and running, especially with a canine companion. Nearly 210 dogs, cats and small pets are currently in the shelter’s care and hoping to find their forever homes. Adoptable pets are available to meet during The Heritage Humane Society’s visiting and adopting hours from noon to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.
