Popeyes fast-food chicken is coming to Richmond Road.

The Williamsburg Planning Commission approved site plans for a new Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Wednesday afternoon at their monthly meeting. The item was on the commission’s consent calendar and passed unanimously.

The Popeyes will be located in front of Aldi and next to Discount Tire, near the intersection of Richmond Road and Ironbound Road.

The fast-food chicken chain operates around 2,600 restaurants around the world.  They are currently awaiting a building permit from the city in order to begin construction, according to City Planning and Codes Compliance Director Carolyn Murphy.

The restaurant will be about 3,200 square feet, according to meeting documents.

Popeye’s did not respond to request for comment Tuesday. No timeline for the beginning of construction was provided by the city of Williamsburg.
