A changing retail world has forced a third-generation family business to close its doors in New Town.

After 55 years of business, Parlett’s Paper Expressions, located at 4309 New Town Ave., will close “for good” in January, according to owners Melissa and Aaron Jones.

“We have so enjoyed serving the Williamsburg community over the years and make this announcement with very heavy hearts,” the owners said in a news release.

Parlett’s Paper Expressions has been in business since 1963 and is a third-generation family business, according to the company’s website.

According to the release, a “changing retail world” prompted the business owners to close down on their own terms in January.

All in-stock items went on sale on Saturday, and are marked at 20 percent off, the release said.

Custom stationery, napkins and invitations can still be ordered through the beginning of December, starting at 10 percent off, the release said. The discount will increase as the closing date gets closer.

Vinyl records, including ones in stock, will remain at 10 percent off through the store’s last few months.

The release said the store will still be placing a “few” last-minute orders before the end of September, so those wanting to get the in-store 20 percent discount can stock up on paper items if they pre-order.

“As you know, customer service has also been an important part of our business and we would like to extend that service to you as long as our doors are open,” the release said.
