WILLIAMSBURG — There is a new doughnut option for those in search of treats that are gluten-free, nut-free, and vegan.
The business is called No Nuts Donuts, and it is coming to a local farmers market.
The founder of the local business, Catie Maharg, was searching for food options for her adopted son, who was diagnosed with Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE).
EOE causes him to be allergic to a broad range of food options. Catie, who is a professionally-trained chef, decided to experiment and create food that her son could enjoy.
“So I started developing recipes for him, and I developed these doughnuts,” said Catie. “My family was eating them and they said ‘You really need to turn this into a business.’ I noticed a lot of people online were asking for vegan and gluten-free options together, and nowhere around here does that, just for cross-contamination purposes.”
Catie is currently in the second week of taking orders. She operates the business out of her home where she preps and makes donuts to order.
Each week, No Nuts Donuts will offer glazed yeast doughnuts as well as one variety of cake doughnut, doughnut holes, and one different variety of yeast doughnut.
“Right now we’re doing orders for pickups on Fridays,” said Caite. “We have Facebook and all of our orders right now are just direct. People can reach out to me directly in messages. There’s a phone number listed on the Facebook page as well.”
The local donut business will be making its first farmers market appearance on April 9 during the Toano Farmers Market (organized by Lofty Dreams Farm), located at 3140 Forge Rd, in Toano.
