What’s going on at the Lightfoot McDonald’s? A facelift

The McDonald’s restaurant in Lightfoot is closed temporarily as crews renovate the store.

The restaurant at 6473 Richmond Road is tentatively scheduled to fully reopen Oct. 8, General Manager Mitchell Schook said.

The store will serve food through the drive-thru only starting Monday or Tuesday, Schook added.

The remodeling includes a “whole new lobby” and updated bathrooms. The inside and exterior of the building will now be fully compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act, Schook said.

The kitchen will stay mostly the same.

Another Williamsburg-area McDonald’s is also slated to close for several weeks, Schook said. Planning Commission documents show the McDonald’s at 4521 John Tyler Highway has been discussing a remodeling plan with county staff.

McDonald’s corporate office did not immediately return a request for comment and further information on other renovations on Monday.

James City County Planning Director Paul Holt said the renovations are a scaled-back version of a special-use permit approved by the Board of Supervisors in 2014, before Lightfoot Marketplace was constructed.

The original plan included demolishing the current building, but now the plan calls for only include updating the interior and making the exterior ADA-compliant.

The changes for the current remodel only required approval of county staff because they are more minor than what was originally proposed, Holt said.
