WILLIAMSBURG — Plant lovers and gardeners rejoice. There is now a way to get free flower and vegetable seeds.
Introducing the Williamsburg Seed Library. Located at Spoke + Art Provisions Co., the seed library was started by Ashley Seutter, a local freelance artist and graphic designer.
“I’ve never seen a seed library before,” she said. “I got the idea because I harvest seeds from everything, but eventually I had too many than I knew what to do with.”
So Seutter decided to fill a need and got a cabinet ready to house the little seed library. To find the perfect location, she asked around on Facebook and was directed to Steve Rose, owner of Spoke + Art Provisions Co., located off of John Tyler Hwy. According to Seutter, this was the perfect place to give back to the community.
“I’d rather give to others if I can,” she said.
How does it work?
Similar to Little Free Libraries, the Seed Library is a give and take system. If people want to take seeds, they’re free to do so, but Seutter asks that participants only take what they can grow during the current season.
Residents can also donate their own seeds. Seutter stocked the cabinet with envelopes and provided examples of what to write on them.
“So if you want to include your initials or a special note, you can do that, and it’s a cool way of connecting with people,” Seutter said.
As for what’s actually growing, Seutter said that she is attempting to grow spaghetti squash for the first time. She also enjoys growing lots of melon and looks forward to being able to plant pumpkins.
The Williamsburg Seed Library is located at 3449 John Tyler Hwy at Spoke + Art Provisions Co. The library is also open 24 hours. Those who want to get more connected in the Seed Library communication can also join the library’s Facebook page by clicking here.
