Flash flood advisory will take effect Monday night, Tuesday

VIRGINIA BEACH — A flash flood advisory will take effect this evening and last until Tuesday evening, forecasters said.

An alert from the National Weather Service said thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rain will move into the region Monday night. Rainfall amounts are predicted to be between two and four inches.

The flash flood advisory includes southeast Virginia Beach and Norfolk, as well as Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Suffolk.

Rainfall runoff could result in rapid water level rises in streams and creeks and cause ponding on roadways.

A high wind watch is also in effect from Tuesday morning through the evening. The NWS said potentially damaging wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph are possible.

Dominion Energy said the company is preparing for possible power outages as a result of the storms. Residents should take care to stock any emergency preparedness kits and have flashlights, water, medicines, portable radios, extra batteries and non-perishable goods on hand in the event of power loss.
