Update 1 p.m.: Police have apprehended a 40-year-old Hampton man suspected of shooting another man inside a Second Street auto shop and barricading himself in the business for several hours Tuesday morning.
The suspect, Michael Sean Taylor, was taken into custody around 12:20 p.m. after deputies broke an hours-long standoff by deploying tear gas and using a taser on Taylor. Formal charges had not been filed as of 1 p.m., said Sheriff Danny Diggs of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office.
According to Capt. Dennis Ivey of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, police had the suspect barricaded inside Ebby’s Auto Painting/Collision Shop for over three hours before taking him into custody.“The deputies are fine and we are very happy that this has come to a conclusion,” Ivey said.
A domestic dispute between two men led to a shooting inside a Second Street auto shop Tuesday morning, police say.
According to Sheriff Danny Diggs of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, the suspect, who is described as a white male, entered Ebby’s Auto Painting/Collision Shop in the York County section of Williamsburg at 8:56 a.m. and fired several shots at one of the employees.

The two men were known to each other, Diggs said. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries. He was still alive at 11 a.m.
Nine employees were in the business at the time of the shooting and one was taken hostage for a brief period, but was quickly released unharmed, Diggs said. The other employees were also able to escape unharmed.
Police were still in the process of negotiating with the suspect at 11:30 a.m.
“We’re exploring a lot of different options on how to best resolve this situation,” Diggs said. “We have used some varying techniques to get him to surrender himself.”

Police barricaded the suspected active shooter inside the auto shop, according to Capt. Dennis Ivey of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office.
According to Diggs, the Sheriff’s Office was assisted by James City County police, the FBI, the ATF, Virginia State Police, Newport News Fire Department and York County Fire Department.
Tyler Felty, who was standing near the barricade, said his uncle John Hill works at the auto shop, but he had not heard from him yet.
According to reports from the scene, a SWAT team was moving into the area shortly after 10 a.m.
The area of Second Street near the business was closed to traffic, said York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Shelley Ward.
“Right now we’re just telling people to shelter in place,” Ivey said. “Just lock your doors. No need to panic, but please stay away from windows.”

The York County School Division called for precautionary lockdowns at Magruder Elementary School and Queens Lake Middle School, according to an alert from the division.
“Division and school staff are in constant communication with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office and are following established safety procedures at the schools,” read the alert. “While access to and from the schools is restricted as part of these safety measures, instruction and activities are ongoing inside the schools.”
Students are attending summer school and Summer Fun programs at MES and students are participating in the Boys & Girls Club and Summer Fun at QLMS, the alert read.
