Update 9:20 a.m. Monday: State police have released the name of the driver killed in Sunday’s crash. 54-year-old Wesley Daniel Sharpe of Newport News died of injuries sustained after he fell from a motorcycle and was struck by a tractor trailer near the Lee Hall exit of I-64 East, said Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police.
The accident involved four vehicles. Two motorcyclists were traveling eastbound on I-64 in the right lane behind a tractor trailer, when both drivers attempted to changes lanes while traffic was coming to a stop, Anaya said.
While attempting to change lanes, Sharpe’s motorcycle — a 1982 Harley Davidson — struck the rear of a Chevrolet Suburban, causing the other motorcyclist to strike Sharpe’s motorcycle.
Sharpe subsequently fell off his motorcycle and was struck by the tractor trailer.
“It is unknown at this time if alcohol was a contributing factor,” Anaya said.
Update 11:44 p.m.: The Virginia Department of Transportation has reported a fatality in the crash, but no more information is available at this time. All lanes have reopened.
An accident involving a tractor trailer and motorcycle shut down all eastbound lanes near the Lee Hall exit of Interstate 64 Sunday evening, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
According to Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police, the accident occurred at approximately 6:51 p.m. A detour was set up at Exit 247 shortly after 7 p.m., according to VDOT’s Twitter.
The motorcyclist is reported to have serious injuries, Anaya said.
VDOT is warning drivers to “expect major delays.”
