Local fans of classical music will have the opportunity to travel to Italy, Hungary, Romania and the North Pole — all without a passport.
The Virginia Symphony Orchestra announced its programming for the 2017-2018 Williamsburg Classics Series Friday. The lineup includes works inspired by Italian painter Sandro Botticelli, songs by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály, Romanian folk ballads by György Ligeti and a holiday brass concert.
The four-concert series begins Thursday, Oct. 12 at 8 p.m., at Phi Beta Kappa Hall with Copland’s Clarinet Concerto. The program will open with Respighi’s Botticelli Triptych, a piece inspired by Italian painter Sandro Botticelli’s, whose works are currently on display at the Muscarelle Museum of Art through April 6.
The second installment will take place Nov. 9 at 8 p.m., at Crosswalk Community Church, and will begin with Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály’s Dances of Galanta. The third installment will be hosted at Saint Bede Catholic Church on Dec. 15. The Holiday Brass concert will feature festive sounds of the season, as played by VSO brass and percussion sections.
The series concludes on Friday, March 23, 2018, 8 p.m., at Crosswalk Community Church with György Ligeti’s Concert Romanesc, a modern piece inspired by the Romanian folk tradition. The performance come to a grande finale with Mozart’s Symphony No. 35, a piece Mozart advised be played “as fast as possible.”
