The former chairman of the James City County Republican Committee, Charles Young, 69, of James City County, pleaded guilty in federal court to one charge of receipt of child pornography Tuesday.
In the wake of the conviction, Charles Young faces a minimum five years in prison and a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, according to a news release from the Department of Justice for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Charles Young was originally scheduled for a jury trial in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia Feb. 22.
According to the statement of facts filed with the plea agreement, a family member of Young’s called the James City County Police to report that Young was in possession of child pornography in August. He was charged with 10 counts of receiving child pornography and indicted by a federal grand jury on Nov. 15. Nine of the counts were dismissed as part of the plea agreement filed in open court Tuesday.
Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrested Charles Young without incident at his Williamsburg home on Nov. 16.
WYDaily spoke with the family member in December. He identified himself as Jared Young, Charles Young’s son.
“My family initiated this investigation,” Jared Young said in a prepared statement. “And has fully cooperated with Law Enforcement to hold my Father to Account. The public safety and trust has always been our number one priority, even at the painful cost of my Father’s freedom.”
According to the statement of facts, Jared Young provided enough information to allow police to obtain a search warrant for Charles Young’s home on Aug. 18. There, detectives seized a number of electronic devices. A forensic examiner later found more than 22,000 images of child pornography on the devices. The child pornography was believed to have been manufactured outside the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Charles Young also admitted to receiving a movie containing images of minor males engaged in sexually explicit activity, the release stated.
Charles Young had previously served as the JCC Republican Committee Chairman. T. C. “Chris” Henderson now serves as chairman, according to the committee’s website.
Martin Culbreth, of the FBI’s Norfolk Field Office, made the announcement after the plea was accepted Tuesday. Charles Young will be sentenced on May 17.
After Chuck Young’s arrest, some community members and Williamsburg-James City County School Board officials demanded his wife, Sandra Young, resign from the School Board. Sandra Young declined to resign, stating publicly at the Dec. 13 School Board meeting that she had done nothing wrong.
“I share the outrage, I don’t think anybody could be more outraged than my family is right now,” Sandra Young said at the close of the Dec. 13 meeting.
