York County elementary student brings gun to school, police say

A Seaford Elementary School teacher found a handgun in the backpack of a 6-year-old student Friday thanks to a tip from another student. 

According to a news release from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, after receiving the tip, the teacher located an “old hand gun” in the student’s unattended backpack. Deputies were then called to the scene. 

“Upon inspecting this gun it was found to be old and in terrible condition,” the release stated. 

The gun was unloaded did not appear to be functional. There was also no ammunition found near the weapon.

“At this time we have no reason to believe that this student intended on harming anyone,” the release stated. 

According to the release, an investigation is ongoing, but investigators “feel confident that it was an isolated incident and that no child was ever targeted or in danger.”

“We are very proud that a student knew something and said something!” the release stated. “We will always to continue to work with the school system to keep our kids safe!”
