Update 9:20 a.m.: At approximately 7:46 a.m. Thursday, Kyle Andrew Rhoades, 26, of York County, was apprehended inside a townhome on the 100 block of Wethersfield Park located in the York Crossing subdivision.
According to Lt. Dennis Ivey of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the home at 11:42 p.m. Wednesday after a house alarm was activated. Deputies arrived six minutes later to find Rhoades running out of the back door of the home and into a fenced backyard. Before deputies could apprehend him, Rhoades ran back into the townhouse and barricaded himself inside for several hours.
“We tried for hours to communicate with the suspect with no luck,” Ivey said in a press conference Thursday morning. “At some point we found out that the suspect was actually in the attic of the townhouse and we ended up forcing entry into the townhouse.”
Ivey said that when deputies entered the home and tried to remove Rhoades from the attic, Rhoades began speaking with authorities.
“He was taken into custody without any problems,” Ivey said. “He didn’t resist.”
While Rhoades was not armed at the time he was apprehended, Ivey said deputies had to assume he was carrying a weapon.
“In our job, everybody is considered armed,” Ivey said.
Deputies later found guns laying in the backyard, which Ivey says Rhoades had attempted steal from the residence.
Newport News Police and Hampton Police assisted in the arrest, Ivey said.
Rhoades is facing burglary charges and additional charges may be pending. An investigation is ongoing.
Original story: A suspect wanted by the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office barricaded himself inside a townhouse in the York Crossing subdivision Thursday morning.
Residents who live east of Constitution Drive have been asked to stay in their residence until further notice, according to a YPSO release.
York Crossing bus routes have been temporarily suspended due to the situation, according to an announcement posted on the York County School Division’s Twitter.
“We have already done some evacuations in that general area,” Lt. Dennis Ivey said in a video posted to the YPSO Facebook page. “But we are asking anyone who lives East of Constitution Drive to stay in their residence and not take any chances.”
“We’re working now to peacefully resolve the situation,” Ivey said. “We’ll update you as soon as we’re able.”
