Family Fun
Come on out to the James City County Library to enjoy a special presentation from the Virginia Living Museum on Thursday. Reptiles Around the World will appeal to animal enthusiasts of all ages. This event is free and open to the public.
If you’re looking for something fun to do with the kids this weekend, look no further than Catch a Craft at the James City County Library. This family-friendly program kicks of at 10:30 a.m. Friday and will give little ones an opportunity to try their hand at a fun craft. No reservations are required, and this activity is free.
This Saturday plan a parents’ night out and send your kids to the Drop Off Zone at the WISC. Kids will be entertained starting at 6 p.m. with laser tag, clip and climb, gymnastics, soccer and other playground activities. Pizza and a drink are included with the cost of admission. Tickets are $30 for the first child registered online and $25 for the second child, or $35 and $30 respectively at the door.
The Williamsburg Regional Library is hosting a LEGO open play afternoon on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. Children ages five and older are invited to attend this fun and free event and build amazing creations at the library. Children under nine should be supervised by a parent.
Music and Arts
In the mood to dance? The Main Event Band will be performing at this week’s Shagging on the Riverwalk in Yorktown on Thursday night. Whether you’re a novice or a shagging expert, Shagging on the Riverwalk promises a great time. Bring blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy the show. This event is free and open to the public.
This Saturday the Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center is hosting the first of two classes on digital photography that will run this Saturday at 10 a.m. Attendees can expect to learn how to use a digital camera and compose good photographs, as well as how to edit and process photos to get the best possible images. Admission is $48 or$43 for members and includes both classes. Students should bring a digital camera with them.
7 Bridges, an Eagles Tribute Band from Nashville, will be headlining the New Town Music Fest this Saturday. Food, beer and wine will be available for purchase and local musician Willie TinType is opening. Tickets are $15 and a military discount is available with I.D. The show starts at 5 p.m. and will take place in New Town at Legacy Hall.
Head to the banks of Lake Maury for a night of music at The Mariners’ Park. Karnivale will be the act this week in the Thursdays by the Lake concert series. The free show begins at 6 p.m.
Food and Drink
Nothing says summer like food hot off the grill. Waypoint Seafood and Grill, in partnership with Phillips Energy Inc., is hosting a grilling series starting 10 a.m. Saturday. This hourlong class will include a grilling demo as well as info about how to use the latest in grilling technology. The class will take place at the Philips Energy location at Gloucester Point and is free and open to the public.
Yorktown Market Days continue this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Water Street. Shoppers can pick from vendors’ extensive selection of fruits, vegetables, breads, fish, flowers and art.
The Williamsburg Farmers Market has all your Fourth of July picnic needs covered, so don’t forget to stop by between 8 a.m. and noon Saturday before you head out to the day’s festivities. Vendors will be fully stocked with fresh corn, fruits, baked goods, flowers and more, and the LCV Project will be performing from 9 to 11 a.m. to get shoppers in the holiday mood. The market accepts cash, major credit cards, William & Mary Express and SNAP.
Stop by the Toano Farmers Market on Saturday to pick up all your produce for the week. While you’re there, peruse the variety of items available at Bob’s Sausage Company, Rainbow Eggs and Heidi’s Home Grown. The market will begin at 8 a.m. and wrap up around noon.
Come on out to the Regency Room this Saturday at 8:30 to enjoy a cigar and the dulcet tones of a guitar. For $45 you can enjoy two alcoholic beverages, a cigar and a savor table on the Regency Room Terrace. This event is weather permitting.
Wine-lovers won’t want to miss Wine, Wit & Wisdom: A Closer Look at Virginia Wine, presented at the Taste Studio on Saturday at 2 p.m. This interactive wine tasting will also feature small bites and plenty of information about the burgeoning wine industry in Virginia. Tickets are $45 per person and available only to 21 and older.
Everything Else
Ever wanted to learn Tai Chi? Now’s your chance. Free beginner Tai Chi classes are being offered every Thursday starting this week in the parking lot at Quarterpath Recreation Center. Take advantage of the coolest part of the day to get outside and enjoy nature. Class starts at 7:30 a.m. and lasts for an hour. No pre-registration is required.
The James City County Recreation Center is holding a free diabetes risk assessment screening this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. This is a paper test and there will be no blood test involved. Blood pressure checks will also be available. No registration is required.
Those looking to get their history fix this weekend should plan to attend “The Pious Man’s Daughter, The Rebel’s Wife,” a Colonial Williamsburg presentation taking place at the Art Museums on Saturday. Learn about Betsy Nicolas, the future Mrs. Edmund Randolph, and how her upbringing prepared her for life as the wife of a revolutionary. Admission is included with a ticket to the museum.
