The York County School Division recognizes one senior from each of the division’s four high schools during the school year for their exceptional academic achievements and community involvement for the Senior of the Month Award.
The students selected for this month will be recognized by the York County School Board at its meeting March 30.
The YCSD Seniors of the Month for February are:
Hailey Bauer of Bruton High School
Bauer has stood out as a leader at Bruton High School, serving as treasurer of the Spanish Honor Society, vice president of Key Club, and treasurer of the Student Council Association. She has also excelled academically, earning a 4.54 GPA and receiving high academic honors each year at Bruton, and gaining induction to the National Honor Society and Chemistry Honor Society. Outside the classroom, Bauer has shined as an athlete, playing for four years on Bruton’s volleyball team and volunteering as a counselor at the Aloha volleyball academy.
John McCormick of Tabb High School
McCormick has stood out academically at Tabb High School, earning a 4.25 GPA, ranking in the top-10 percent of his class and gaining recognition as an AP Scholar with distinction. He has also gained induction to the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society at Tabb. McCormick has also spent four years as a member of Tabb’s Jr. ROTC program, where he serves as an organizational commander. In his free time, McCormick tutors his fellow students in math, volunteers at the SPCA animal shelter and Virginia, and participates in church mission trips.
Kealsie Robles of York High School
Robles has excelled as an athlete at York High School, leading the school’s field hockey team. She was First Team All-Conference last season, and was All-Tournament Most Valuable Player at the 2013 Falcon Invitational tournament. Robles’s talents as an athlete have earned her a scholarship for next year at Old Dominion University. She has also been a leader off the field, participating in the Future Business Leaders of America, Key Club and Student Council Association. Robles has also stood out academically, earning a place on York’s honor roll and gaining induction to the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society.
Evan Sperling of Grafton High School
Sperling has distinguished himself as both an athlete and student at Grafton High School. He led the Grafton Clippers football team for two seasons at quarterback, played for three years as a center/forward on the school’s basketball team and pitched for four years on the baseball team. His accomplishments earned him Grafton’s male athlete of the year award as a sophomore and junior, First Team All-Conference honors in basketball and baseball, and recognition as Conference 19 player of the year in basketball. Sperling has also succeeded in the classroom, earning a 3.5 GPA and academic honors all four years at Grafton.
Local Middle School Students Claim High Finishes at Regional Competition
Two teams of local middle school students showed off their intellectual muscle at a regional competition last weekend.
Teams from Tabb Middle School and Lois S. Hornsby Middle School captured second- and third-place honors at the regional “Battle of the Books” competition March 21 at the Williamsburg Regional Library.
Sponsored by the library, the Battle of the Books challenges teams composed of students from grades 4 and 5 and grades 6-8 to read 12 books, and then answer questions about them in a trivia competition.
The books included for this year’s battle were:
