Art in All Forms
Duane Michals, a photographer known for writing on his images, is giving a talk at William & Mary on Thursday. Hosted by the Department of Art and Art History as part of its Distinguished Lecture Series, the presentation is free and starts at 5 p.m. in room 101 of Andrews Hall.
The spirit of Dr. Seuss comes to life this weekend as the students of Hornsby Middle School perform “Seussical Jr.” Directed by veteran local performer and theatre instructor Christina Marshburn, the musical follows the story of Horton the Elephant and his friends. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. The performance starts at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Join local hip-hop artists Friday as they celebrate women’s history month at William & Mary’s Swem Library. The library will host female radio personalities, models, DJs and the hair braider for basketball player Allen Iverson in two panel discussions at 6 p.m. The presentation begins with a reception at 5 p.m. in the library’s Botetourt Theatre and Gallery on the ground floor.
Playing the Game
William & Mary’s men’s lacrosse team is back on the field after more than a month. The Tribe will take on Richmond at home at the Martin Family Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday. They’ll be back on the field Sunday for a game against Gardner-Webb at noon.
A unique twist on the sport of basketball is coming to Lafayette High School this Sunday as the Harlem Ambassadors come to show off their high-flying slam dunks. Presented by Greenwood Christian Academy, the Harlem Ambassadors game involves comedy routines, music, dancing and games for children. The event runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets range for $8 to $12, and admission is free for children ages 3 and under.
Learn Something New
A retired William & Mary professor wants to educate the public about all things plants. Jerre Johnson will give a short review of the geologic history of this area, the processes that shaped its landscape and soils and a brief look into the life that existed here during the recent geologic past during his presentation at the Freedom Park Interpretive Center. The presentation, which is part of the Learn and Grow Educational Series sponsored by the Williamsburg Botanical Garden, begins at 10 a.m. Saturday and is free and open to the public. A $5 donation to support the Williamsburg Botanical Garden is suggested.
Learn about the Spanish exploration of the New World as author Aleck Loker gives a free talk on his new book, “Signing La Florida.” The book explores the clash of European and indigenous cultures that resulted from the Spanish’s conquest. The talk is free and open to the public and begins at 2 p.m. Friday at William & Mary’s bookstore.
Spend a weekend experiencing what it was like to be in the military throughout the centuries at Jamestown Settlement. The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation hosts “Military Through the Ages,” featuring re-enactors, a showcase of military vehicles and equipment, comparative artillery firings and musical performances. Tickets are $16.75 for adults, $7.75 for children 6-12 and free for children under age 6 and for Historic Triangle residents with proof of residency and W&M students. The event runs all day Saturday and Sunday.
Craft beer has exploded in Virginia in the last few years. Come learn about the history of the industry in the Commonwealth by watching a documentary at the Kimball Theatre called “From Grain to Growler.” Presented with DoG Street Pub, the screening will be followed by a panel discussion with local brewers and the documentary director. A $10 ticket gets you into the screening and a free appetizer at DoG Street Pub. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Fresh Foods
Enjoy a day spent outside at two local farmers markets on Saturday. The Williamsburg Farmers Market, located on Duke of Gloucester Street, will feature vendors selling fish, artisan chocolate, cheese, meats, honey, baked goods and more with live music by Fiddler’s Green from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Once you’ve done your shopping in the city, head up the road to the Toano Farmers Market, held Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the pavilion near the James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Deaprtment located at 3135 Forge Road. The market features Bob’s Sausage Company, Rainbow Eggs, Heidi’s Home Grown and more.
