A self-taught photographer known for upending sequences of photos with handwriting to tell stories is coming to the College of William & Mary on Thursday.

Duane Michals will be speaking as part of the college’s free Distinguished Lecture Series, launched by the department of art and art history in 2011.

He has shot for magazines such as Esquire, Vogue and Scientific American and has published more than a dozen books, according to a William & Mary news release.

Michals, now in his 80s and living in New York City, is also the recipient of several awards and grants including the International Center of Photography Infinity Award for Art and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Photography Eliot Dudik arranged the visit and said it is an honor to have Michals speak at the college.

“Michals remains powerfully influential, not only through his profound marriage of language and imagery, but also by virtue of his particular ability to examine and relay ideas that are not readily observable,” he said.

The talk begins at 5 p.m. Thursday in room 101 of Andrews Hall and is free and open to the public.
