The owners of a local eatery have supported reading for youngsters in the area.

Gil and Bonnie Short, of Shorty’s Diner, have contributed $2,500 to the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg for its Reading is Fun program.

The money will be used to purchase books and supplies.

Kiwanis and community volunteers read monthly to the about 150 children enrolled in Head Start across Norge Elementary, James River Elementary and the Williamsburg-James City County Community Action Agency.

Each of the children, ages 3 to 5, get to keep a copy of the book that is read.

The Kiwanis program has been running for more than 20 years.
