Rally for the Cure, an initiative of the Susan G. Komen organization, will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kiwanis Park tennis courts. The tennis event will benefit Susan G. Komen and Beyond Boobs!, a Williamsburg area-based breast health nonprofit.
In addition to raising funds, Rally for the Cure’s mission is to educate people about the importance of early detection.
It has been held locally in the past, but in the spring months.
“Usually it’s in May, but we wanted to do it for Breast Cancer Awareness Month here in October,” said DeRocke Croom, a recreation supervisor with the City of Williamsburg Parks and Recreation.
The program is presented by the City and Brent Hughes’ Elite 10s Academy. Hughes is a local tennis instructor who works with the city in addition to offering private lessons.
The pair have teamed up in the past for similar events in other seasons, as well. In November it was a Turkey Shoot Jumbled Tennis Doubles to benefit veterans in need of housing through Homes for Our Troops.
“We just try to pick organizations to give back,” Croom said.
Rally for the Cure will be played in doubles format, but adults and teens can sign up as individuals. The cost is $30 per player.
